How often should you service your bike?

How often should you service your bike?

One question we hear all the time at SV is: ‘How often should I service my bike?’ It’s right up there with ‘Is it weird to name my bike?’ Answer: not at all. Dave and Sally are both solid choices. The real answer? It depends on where you ride, how often, and whether you treat your bike like a beloved steed or like that plant you forgot to water for six months. Whether you're a weekend cruiser, daily commuter, or Lycra clad speed demon, your bike is your ticket to freedom, fitness, and accidental chain tattoos. But just like a car your bike needs regular attention to keep performing at its best.

So, here’s a simple service schedule to keep your bike in top shape year-round.

Weekly At-Home Checks
Think of this as your pre-flight check which could save you from bigger problems down the line.

Tyre Check
Give your tyres a firm squeeze like you’re testing avocados. If they feel too soft, it’s time for a pump up. If you’re not sure what pressure they need, check the side of the tyre. It’ll tell you the PSI or BAR and possibly its hopes and dreams.

Brake Check
Squeeze those brake levers. They should feel firm and snappy, not like soggy noodles. If they’re spongy, it’s time for a tweak.

Chain Check
Give your chain a quick wipe-down with a rag. If it sounds like it’s begging for help, add a drop of chain lube. A dry chain is a sad chain.

Bolt Check
Channel your inner mechanic and grab your allen keys. Check your handlebars, saddle, and wheels are nice and tight. No one wants surprise acrobatics mid-ride. These habits save money, stress, and embarrassing roadside meltdowns.

Every 3–6 Months: General Service
If you’re riding regularly, your bike deserves more than just a passing hello. Give it a proper once over every few months to ensure your bike is running smoothly and nothing is wearing out faster than it should, especially if you're a commuter battling potholes daily. Think of this as a check up at the doctor. It keeps your bike happy, healthy, and far less likely to throw a tantrum halfway up a hill.

Every 12 Months: Full Service
Once a year (or every 6 months for high-mileage riders), your bike deserves the best. We’re talking full strip-down, deep clean, drivetrain overhaul, cable replacement and the whole spa package. Basically, if bikes could say ‘aaaah’ this is when they would. Having your bike routinely serviced is a great way to make the most out of your bike's moving parts and to be able to keep those wheels turning longer. But do not wait until your next service if you notice these niggles:

Gears slipping
If your bike's changing gears like a confused DJ, something’s out of whack, could be stretched cables or a worn cassette.

Weird noises:
Squeaks, creaks, and clunks aren’t just annoying, they’re your bike’s way of crying for help.

Spongy brakes:
If your brakes feel like marshmallows, it’s time to replace the pads or bleed the hydraulics. Stopping is important. Trust us.

Feeling wobbly:
Your bike shouldn’t wobble like a toddler on espresso. If it does, get your wheels, headset, or bottom bracket checked.

We get it, it’s tempting to wait until something really breaks before getting your bike serviced. But prevention is cheaper (and less embarrassing) than pushing your bike home because your chain turned into spaghetti. A well maintained bike means safer rides, smoother performance, longer lifespan and fewer roadside swears. Whether you need a quick safety check or the full treatment, here at SV we’ve got your back. Book online, call or pop in and let’s keep those wheels turning, the gears shifting, and the good rides rolling.
